🛡️ How to Stay Safe on Roblox (2026)
A Player's Guide to Spotting Red Flags, Using Safety Tools, and Getting Help
Roblox is a great place to hang out, play games, and meet new friends. Most people you'll meet there are cool. But some people aren't, and they specifically look for kids to mess with. This guide is for you. It's not about scaring you off Roblox. It's about giving you the knowledge to protect yourself so you can keep playing the games you love without anyone getting in your head.
If you read this whole thing, you'll know exactly what to look for, how to lock down your account, and what to do if something feels off. None of this is your fault if it happens. The only person who's wrong in a bad situation is the adult acting weird. Your job is just to know what's up.
🚩 What "Being Weird" Actually Looks Like
People who target kids online don't introduce themselves as creeps. They act nice. Like, really nice. Way too nice for someone who just met you. The whole point of how they operate is making you feel special before they ask for something messed up.
Here are the actual things to watch for, in order of how it usually plays out:
1. They get attached to you fast
Someone you just met in a game wants to be your best friend within a day. They send you compliments, ask lots of questions about your life, remember small details you mentioned. This is called "love bombing" and it's a tactic, not real friendship.
✋ Real talk: Real friends don't try this hard this fast. People who genuinely just want to play games with you will be chill about it.
2. They want to talk OUTSIDE Roblox
This is the biggest red flag. They'll say something like:
- ✅"Roblox chat is weird, let's move to Discord"
- ✅"Add me on Snap so we can talk more"
- ✅"My Roblox account got banned, here's my Insta"
- ✅"Can I get your number?"
Why this matters: Roblox filters and moderates chat. Other apps don't, especially the same way. The second you move off Roblox, they have way more freedom to say messed up stuff. They KNOW that. That's why they ask.
🛑 Rule: Never move conversations off Roblox to chat with someone you haven't met in real life. Period. Doesn't matter how cool they seem.
3. They send you Robux or gifts
They might offer to gift you Robux, send you cool limiteds, or buy you stuff in your favorite game. Sometimes they just do it without you asking. This is NOT a normal nice gesture from a stranger. It's setting up a debt.
The next step is usually them asking for something in return. A photo. A video call. Something private. They built up "you owe me" by giving you stuff first.
🛑 Rule: If a stranger online sends you gifts, you don't owe them anything. Block them. Report them. Move on.
4. They ask about who you live with and your schedule
"Are your parents home?" "When are you usually alone?" "Do you have your own room?" These questions sound friendly but they're collecting info. Real friends don't need to know your home situation that fast.
5. They get sexual or romantic with you
Compliments turn into "you're so attractive" or "I have a crush on you." They ask about your body, what you're wearing, if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend. They might send you weird messages or pictures.
🚨 If this happens: It's not your fault, no matter what they say. Tell a trusted adult RIGHT NOW. Save screenshots first if you can, then close Roblox and go talk to someone.
6. They tell you to keep your "friendship" a secret
"Don't tell your parents we talk." "Our friendship is special, just between us." "If you tell anyone, I'll get in trouble and you won't see me anymore."
This is the biggest sign something is wrong. Real friendships don't need to be hidden. Anyone telling you to keep them a secret from your parents or guardians is trying to control you.
🔒 Lock Down Your Roblox Account in 5 Minutes
Your account settings are your first line of defense. Take 5 minutes right now and check these:
Account Privacy
Go to Settings → Privacy. For the safest setup:
- ✅Who can message me: Friends (or No one)
- ✅Who can chat with me in app: Friends (or No one)
- ✅Who can invite me to private servers: Friends (or No one)
- ✅Who can join me: Friends (or No one)
- ✅Who can see my inventory: Friends (or No one)
If you're under 13, Roblox already sets most of these tighter by default. Don't loosen them just because someone asks you to.
Account Restrictions (under 13)
If you're under 13, Roblox restricts a lot automatically. Don't lie about your age to get more freedom. Those restrictions are there for a reason. The chat filter, the no-direct-messaging rule, all of that exists to protect you from this exact stuff.
Block who you need to block
Right-click their username in chat or in a game → Block User. They can't message you, join your games, or see you online. They WILL try to come back with alt accounts. Block those too. You're not being rude. You're being smart.
Don't share your password with ANYONE
Not your "best friend." Not someone who says they need it to "give you Robux." Not someone claiming to be Roblox staff. Roblox will NEVER ask you for your password. If anyone does, they're trying to steal your account.
📣 How to Report Someone
Roblox has a report button on basically everything. You can report:
- ✅Any player (right-click their name or tap their avatar)
- ✅Any chat message (right-click the message)
- ✅Any image, asset, or game
- ✅Anything weird that happens in any experience
When you report:
- ✅Pick the closest category (sexual content, harassment, scam, etc.)
- ✅Add a description if you can
- ✅You don't have to give your name or anything
Important: Save screenshots BEFORE you report or block. Once you block them, you might lose access to the chat history. Screenshots help Roblox actually take action.
When something is bad enough to also tell an adult
- ✅Anyone asks for photos of you, especially without clothes
- ✅Anyone asks to meet in person
- ✅Anyone sends you sexual messages, images, or videos
- ✅Anyone threatens you or your family
- ✅Anyone tells you to keep your conversations a secret
For ANY of these, you also need to tell a trusted adult. We'll talk about that next.
💬 How to Tell a Trusted Adult (Without Feeling Weird)
This is the part most kids find hardest. You feel embarrassed. You feel like you'll be blamed. You feel like your device will get taken away.
Here's the deal:
- ✅You won't be in trouble. Real adults who care about you won't blame you for what someone else did. If they freak out, it's because they're worried, not angry at you.
- ✅You probably WON'T lose your device. Modern parents know Roblox is a thing. They'd rather you keep playing safely than ban you and leave you with no support.
- ✅Telling an adult makes it stop. The adult has more power than you do to actually shut down the bad person. That's why you tell them.
Who counts as a "trusted adult"?
- ✅A parent or guardian
- ✅An older brother or sister you trust
- ✅An aunt or uncle
- ✅A teacher or school counselor
- ✅A coach
- ✅A friend's parent
- ✅Any adult who has shown you they actually listen and care
What to actually say
You don't need a speech. Try:
- ✅"Something happened on Roblox and I don't know what to do about it"
- ✅"Someone on Roblox was acting weird and I think you should know"
- ✅"Can I show you a message I got? It made me uncomfortable"
If your first adult doesn't believe you or doesn't help, tell a different adult. Keep going until someone takes it seriously.
If you can't talk to anyone at home
That's real, and it happens. You can:
- ✅Call or text the Crisis Text Line at 741741 (US/Canada/UK)
- ✅Talk to a school counselor or trusted teacher
- ✅Report directly to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children CyberTipline at CyberTipline.org or 1-800-843-5678
The CyberTipline is specifically for stuff like predators, sexual exploitation, and bad images of kids. They take it seriously and they know what to do.
🎯 Quick Safety Habits to Build
These are small things that add up:
- ✅Don't share personal info in games. Not your real name. Not your school. Not your address. Not your phone number. Not photos of yourself or your room.
- ✅Don't share your screen on calls with strangers. Your background, your messages, anything visible can be used against you.
- ✅Keep your friend list to people you actually know in real life. Or at least know really well over time. Random strangers don't need to be your "friend" on Roblox.
- ✅Don't trust someone just because they're nice. Nice strangers are still strangers.
- ✅Trust your gut. If something feels weird, it IS weird. You don't need to be 100% sure to block, report, or tell someone. "It felt off" is enough.
- ✅Talk to your parents about Roblox in general. Show them games you like. Tell them about funny stuff that happens. The more you talk about Roblox normally, the easier it is to bring up the bad stuff if it happens.
🔒 The 2026 Roblox Account Updates
In 2026, Roblox launched new account types specifically to make things safer:
- ✅Roblox Kids (ages 5-8): Chat disabled by default, only Minimal and Mild-rated games allowed. Strong protections built in automatically.
- ✅Roblox Select (ages 9-15): Can gradually unlock more features as you get older. Still has chat restrictions and parental controls.
- ✅Standard (16+): Full access.
Roblox now uses facial age estimation to assign these accounts. Don't try to lie about your age to get more freedom. The restrictions are protecting you from the exact stuff in this guide.
🏁 The One Thing You Need to Remember
If something feels wrong, it IS wrong. You don't need to prove it. You don't need to be sure. You don't need to give the person another chance.
You can block. You can report. You can tell an adult. You can do all three at the same time. None of it makes you uncool, or paranoid, or any other dumb thing someone might call you.
The people who target kids on Roblox count on kids feeling embarrassed or scared to speak up. The moment you speak up, they lose. That's it. That's the whole game.
Quick recap
